The Humane Society of the United States has initiated its Fill the Bowl Project, a new way for congregations to help pets and their families by adding pet food and supplies to holiday collection drives.
 
“During the holidays, churches collect food, clothing and toys for families in need,” said Christine Gutleben, senior director of The HSUS faith outreach program. “Millions of these families have pets, and including pet food in donation drives is another significant way we can bring relief and joy to others during the Christmas season. Fill the Bowl provides a wonderful way for churches to help keep families and pets together.”
 
 The Fill the Bowl Project works by:
 
Keeping families and pets together. Families who are struggling financially may resort to giving up their pets when resources run low. Adding pet food to a food bank donation can help keep pets with their families and out of shelters.
 
Helping local animal shelters. Fill the Bowl encourages faith groups to connect with a local animal shelter in their community to help provide food and supplies needed for the homeless animals in its care.
 
Each project kit includes a poster, two collection bin stickers and 25 postcards. Additional online resources include a bulletin insert and flyer. The free kits can be ordered at humanesociety.org/fillthebowl.
 
The Fill the Bowl Project is part of The HSUS Animal Protection Ministries program, which offers a variety of resources along with examples of projects churches across the nation are doing to help animals in their communities.
