Mormonvoices Announces Rapid Response Resources for Journalists

1 Oct

For Immediate Release

New services help journalists reporting on issues related to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to obtain accurate and timely information.

MormonVoices announced today an expanded "fact check" and information service for journalists researching or reporting on stories involving The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The new service is aimed at assisting journalists seeking to verify and obtain accurate information on the history, doctrine, and cultural practices of Latter-day Saints.

"Many journalists are writing about the 'Mormon Moment,'" stated John Lynch, Managing Director of MormonVoices. "Some of the information being reported is accurate, and some of it misses the mark. We want to help responsible reporters verify information, and gain access to Latter-day Saints who can share their personal experiences relative to stories of the day involving the LDS Church."

Lynch explained that the new service is not intended to supplant information available from the LDS Church, but to augment those resources by providing access to well-informed Mormons who have a firm grasp on the history, doctrine and practices of the Church.
"Our group is unique," Lynch stated, "as it is made up of faithful, articulate Mormons who know a lot about the church and its practices and are also long-time observers of how the church is represented by the media and by hostile sources online. We have a lot to offer anyone trying to put together an accurate, fair portrayal of Mormonism."

MormonVoices (www.MormonVoices.org) is an independent group of volunteers supportive of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the “Mormon Church.” The MormonVoices homepage now features a resource specifically for journalists by offering fact checking, answers to questions, and access to knowledgeable scholars and rank-and-file Mormons with backgrounds and experiences pertinent to stories of the day. These services are free and are intended to be responsive to the tight time constraints of print deadlines. With nearly 1,000 volunteers, MormonVoices can assist reporters on a national and international scale.
"We are dedicated to helping reporters and news organizations get good information that will result in accurate, responsible reporting on timely topics," added Lynch. "We announce this new service as we reach out to news organizations and reporters at this week's 2012 Religion Newswriters Association Conference in Bethesda, where we hope to introduce ourselves to influential news organizations and reporters."
