Mormons take questions from the world

29 May

For Immediate Release

A panel of five Mormons appeared on the BBC World Service radio program, World Have Your Say

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appeared recently on BBC World Service Radio and answered questions from listeners from all over the world. Panel member Charles Dalquist, former Young Men General President of the Church, gave some background on the founding of the religion. Then Steve Densley, Jr., PR Director for the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (“FAIR”) commented on what is being called “the Mormon Moment.” He acknowledged that the presidential candidacy of Mitt Romney is bringing increased attention to the religion. However, he noted that “most Mormons would not like to have their identity limited to just that.” Furthermore, Mormons and Mormonism are gaining prominence all over the world. Densley pointed to the facts that the number of Mormon temples in the world has doubled within the past 12 years, and that there are now more Mormons outside the United States than there are inside.
The panel, which also included three professors from Brigham Young University, took questions from callers that included topics related to polygamy, the Church’s treatment of women and minorities, and the nature and purpose of temples. When asked whether Mitt Romney would be expected to spread the Mormon faith as a president, Densley referenced the Church’s Eleventh Article of Faith, which states: “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.” And while members of the Church believe in being involved in government, “we don’t believe that government should be used to impose our religious beliefs on others.”
The interview is available for download at the World Have Your Say website. http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/whys#playepisode6. The Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (“FAIR”) is a volunteer organization that is supportive of, but not owned by, controlled by, or affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
