VIDEO: We Are The Ones by Tituss Burgess and Middle Church

On Sunday, October 7 at 6 pm at Middle Collegiate Church, Broadway and television actor Tituss Burgess (Jersey Boys, The Little Mermaid, Guys and Dolls, and NBC’s 30 Rock) will perform the songs from the new gospel album Welcome with the Middle Community Chorus. Burgess composed the music and lyrics for Middle Church.

In this election year, when marriage equality and religion are broadly discussed, Middle Collegiate Church offers a rare gospel album preaching all are welcome in God’s house. “You’re welcome if you’re gay; You’re welcome if your straight; bi, transgendered.”  These words are sung by Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Ph.D., senior minister of Middle Collegiate Church.

“We must stand up for the civil rights of all people. All love is God’s love. We are the ones to make LGBT equality happen in this country. We need to share our hunger for equality through music, marching and voting.” Rev. Lewis said.

A music video of a song featured on the album, “We Are The Ones,” directed by Shari Carpenter —who has worked with Spike Lee and Ridley Scott—has also been released on YouTube. The music video features a renowned cast including Burgess, Alyson Palmer (of BETTY), and Broadway’s Jenny Powers (Grease and Little Women).  The song “We Are The Ones,” inspired by a June Jordan poem, emphasizes each of us “are the ones we’ve been waiting for” to create change.

After the concert, attendees will also have the opportunity to register to vote.

Proceeds from the album support social justice ministries at Middle Church. Middle Church has a deep commitment to LGBT ministries, feeding ministries, and racial reconciliation. The album is available on iTunes. The concert will also be live-streamed at 6 pm, Sunday, October 7 on the home page of www.middlechurch.org.

This 6 pm concert is a part of the Art & Soul worship series, which features New York artists who spend their weeks sharing their music or their art on Showtime, Rockwood Music Hall, Sundance Film Festival, Def Poetry Jam, NBC, MTV, and Broadway.
